In Salzburg the first traces of human settlements has been found from the Neolithic Age, thereafter began Celtic settlements around 5000 BC. About 15 BC the Romans made their base called Juvavum and the separate settlements came together to form a larger settlement, the beginnings of the city. After the fall of the Roman Empire in the ruins of Juvavum, St Peter’s church and monastary were founded by bishop Rupert.
Salzburg means “Salt Castle”. It’s wealth came from mining salt. It was ruled by the Prince Archbishop. The Pope used the influence of the Prince Archbishop to spread Christianity.
The real development of Salzburg city came in the period Salzburg State was ruled by the Prince Archbishop, from the Middle Ages to the 19th century.
In 1077 the Archbishop Gebhard started the building of Salzburg fortress due to worries of wars nearby and created a symbol of his successful and power.
After the appointment of Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau in 1587, began the remodelling of the entire city, the creation of large open spaces or squares, and the installation of Baroque architecture.
Salzburg is an outstanding example to the world of baroque architecture. Its historic cityscape, high quality well preserved baroque monuments including palaces, churches and gardens. Salzburg is also influenced by Italian, German and Turkish cultures. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Salzburg is also birthplace to many great musicians and artists. Salzburg’s most famous son,the world famous music genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in Salzburg in 1756. In and around Salzburg city many places are named after him. The airport, the music university, the music festival hall, and two museums. Mozart has given much life to lively city of Salzburg, that may be also a reason to call it Mozart City.
