The town has Roman origins and plenty of history since then, important due to its position on a main route between Italy and Germany, and a history of silver mining. Nowadays just 15km from the border with Austria on the south side of the Brenner Pass. It is just south of Innsbruck. A German speaking town, it is rich in architectural monuments. Vipiteno is the town, Monte Cavallo (Rosskopf) is the ski resort.
