Silvretta Montafon Info

The Silvretta Alps are a mountain range of the Central Eastern Alps shared by Tirol, Vorarlberg (both in Austria) and Graubünden (Switzerland). The Austrian states of Tirol and Vorarlberg are connected by the Silvretta mountain pass. The majority of the peaks rise above three thousand metres and are surrounded by glaciers. Thus, the area is also known as the “Blue Silvretta”. In southern Vorarlberg is the Montafon valley surrounded by the Silvretta mountains. Coming from Bludenz into the valley leads up past St. Anton, Vandans, Schruns and Tschagguns, St. Gallenkirch, Gortipohl, Gaschurn and Partenen. And up by the border with Tyrol is the Silvretta reservoir. The whole valley is a playground with mountains, for hiking in summer and skiing in winter. One of the side valleys gives the resort of Gargellen. In the early 20th century the author Ernest Hemmingway spent time here.
Elisabeth Schwarzkopf lived out the last years of her life in the village of Schruns.
