It lies at the foot of the 2943m HochKönig (meaning High King) mountain, south from Salzburg City. Above the village is the 1900m peak of Aberg Langeck. It is one of the villages making up the HochKönig Winterreich of Ski Amade. Winterreichis meaning winter kingdom.

A day pass is valid for the whole of the HochKönig Winterreich, a multiday pass is valid for the whole of Ski Amade. The scope of slopes available is far more than just Maria Alm’s due to the ease of slipping out across the Winterreich.
Just within Maria Alm there are 3 separate areas. Natrun and Hinterreit gives 300m descent each, Aberg is the big one giving 1060m descent and the links across to Hinterthal and the rest of the HochKönig Winterreich.
