Dachstein Gletcher Info

To the north west from Graz, but much closer to Salzburg, from Salzburg to the south east, the Dachstein is a massif or large expanse mountain. On the massif there are many peaks, the highest at 2995m, and several glaciers, in German “Gletcher”. The Dachstein is mostly shared by the states of Upper Austria and Styria, but as Salzburg is also very near by, it is often know as the Three State Mountain. The glaciers lie between 2700m and 2100m. Approached from the south side above the Ennstal valley from the village of Ramsau there is a toll road leading up to the end of the road at 1700m, several hotels and restaurants, and the bottom station of the cable car taking visitors to 2700m in 6 minutes. It is a popular destination all the year round with many visitors coming to see snow, ice and stunning scenery, others coming for mountain sports, Alpine Ski, Ski touring, Cross country Ski, Snowboard, hiking and rock climbing. High altitude gives extremes of weather. Strong winds prevent lifts from working. Blue sky days are precious! At the top station area there are activities and attactions including the Sky Walk, the Suspension Bridge and the Ice Palace.
